About the Role

As a co-op/intern student at BMO, you will have the opportunity to be heard, keep growing and make a difference. You will join BMO’s AI Engineering and Research teams, participating in the campus program that includes mentorship programs, peer activities, enterprise learning, and AI communities of practice. This role focuses on exploratory AI research, prototyping innovative algorithms, assessing emerging technologies, and helping build next-generation intelligent systems that support financial applications.

Key Accountabilities

• Research cutting-edge AI/ML techniques such as transformer architectures, multimodal models, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), reinforcement learning, and generative AI.

• Prototype models in Python using PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face libraries, vector stores, and LLM frameworks.

• Conduct experiments with structured and unstructured datasets, including feature engineering, data augmentation, and evaluation.

• Assist with LLM experimentation including prompt engineering, model fine-tuning, evaluation pipelines, and agentic AI workflows.

• Explore model performance, scalability, robustness, generalization, and security considerations.

• Document research findings, produce technical summaries, ingest papers, compare model families, and present insights to engineering leadership.

• Collaborate with AI engineers, data scientists, solution architects, and product owners on early-stage prototypes.

• Support model explainability, reproducibility, experiment tracking, and code quality best practices.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in Computer Science, AI, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field, returning to studies after the work term.

• Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, or similar).

• Understanding of machine learning fundamentals, neural networks, and data preprocessing.

• Experience with Git/GitHub and reproducible experimentation workflows.

• Strong written communication skills and ability to translate research insights to diverse audiences.

• Curiosity, creativity, and comfort exploring ambiguous, open-ended research questions.

What You Will Gain

• Experience working with advanced AI research topics used in industry.

• Hands-on model-building exposure to LLMs, agent systems, optimization techniques, and deep learning architectures.

• Ability to explore, design, and prototype new AI capabilities that support banking and financial services.

• Mentorship from senior AI engineers and opportunities to contribute to internal research discussions, demos, and prototypes.

• A deeper understanding of how research translates into real-world enterprise AI solutions.
