Job Description:
Position Overview:
The Scarborough Health Network Research Institute (SHNRI) supports clinicians and researchers in advancing innovative and impactful research that improves patient care.
The Clinical Research Study Assistant (CRSA) will support research activities related to the Predict-Delirium study, a multi-site project led by Unity Health Toronto and funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health through the Ontario Health Models of Care Innovation Fund. The study aims to determine whether integrating AI-based delirium risk prediction with a structured care pathway for high-risk patients can improve adherence to delirium prevention strategies and reduce hospital-acquired delirium on inpatient medical units.
As part of this project, retrospective chart reviews using the CHART-DEL methodology will be conducted to validate the accuracy and clinical utility of the AI prediction tool by assessing delirium occurrence and comparing outcomes with predicted risk.
The Clinical Research Study Assistant will support chart abstraction, data collection, and study coordination activities in accordance with study protocols, institutional research policies, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Chart Abstraction and Data Collection
Conduct retrospective chart reviews using the CHART-DEL standardized abstraction tool
Identify and abstract data related to delirium symptoms, risk factors, diagnostic indicators, interventions, and clinical outcomes
Ensure high levels of accuracy and completeness in chart abstraction
Participate in double-coding exercises to ensure strong inter-rater reliability
Perform visual and chart audits as needed on the selected units to verify documentation accuracy and support data quality
Delirium AI Risk Prediction Activities
Calculate AI delirium prediction scores for newly admitted patients on selected hospital wards
Work with the local research team to identify and communicate high-risk patients during the intervention period
Support implementation of delirium prevention workflows aligned with the study protocol
Data Management and Quality Assurance
Enter study data into REDCap and other research databases
Perform quality checks and resolve data queries as required
Maintain strict confidentiality and ensure compliance with privacy and institutional research regulations
Support maintenance of study documentation and regulatory files
Research Operations Support
Assist with preparation of study materials and documentation
Support Research Ethics Board (REB) submissions, amendments, and renewals as required
Maintain accurate documentation within SHNRI systems (e.g., SharePoint and study binders)
Attend required study training sessions
Provide support to the local research team and study leadership
Assist with administrative tasks for the Research Institute as directed by the Research Operations Manager
Perform other research-related duties as assigned
Follow all applicable Scarborough Health Network (SHN) and Scarborough Health Network Research Institute (SHNRI) policies and procedures
Qualifications
Education
Undergraduate degree or college diploma in a health-related field (e.g., health sciences, nursing, biomedical sciences)
Experience
Experience reviewing patient charts and clinical documentation
Experience with clinical research data collection or coordination
Familiarity with research databases such as REDCap or other clinical research platforms
Knowledge of medical terminology
Skills
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
Strong organizational and time management skills
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and Word
